A VISION, A SHOWROOM A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT, A TIME MACHINE?

After the recession in the early 2000s, people started talking again about the fashionable hotel that had given Sør-Varanger the term «tourist» - the place where people used to mingle in droves and the drinks were loose. The bar in the venerable Old Kirkenes Tourist Hotel opens its doors again under the name of Bar Dû Nord! The moss is spreading and distilled essences from the forest park at Elvenes will flourish, high society masks from split cod heads and sniffing of northern lights are now in vogue. Maybe Ellisif Wessel will occur with her black baby buggy. A dissolution of time is raising. But where has the Spektakel gone? Is it really here - and when is the now?

What we know for sure is that people are waiting for art, fabulous questions and stories to reinvent the concept of time. In the hotel's dusty rooms, we are still looking for a fabled tapestry, Russian espionage equipment and the remains of a Stone Age settlement, while we wonder why the public expects art to provide answers.

In our newly opened establishment, a hybrid blend of the past, the present and future is served. Come by to see, listen, touch, smell, sniff, get a sup, a shot, a sniff or a touch! The bar is the place for artists and performances in the evening and conferences, debates and chill-out during daytime. Look up for the lady with the fishtail and be sure to get hold on our timeless magazine «Lys Dû Nord», the new standard for the Barents region with 26 contributors from all fields of society.
